How to Treat a Sore Throat or Laryngitis

You can tell when you have a sore throat. Your throat is dry and scratchy and it's painful to swallow.
Sore throat isn't an illness in itself, however. Instead, it's usually an indicator of an oncoming illness like the common cold or the flu. [1] Since a sore throat is often the first sign that you're getting sick, it's important to begin treating it as soon as possible.

    Steps

    1. 1
Get lots of rest. Stay home from work or school, and make sure you are sleeping more than enough. Adequate rest is extremely important, especially when you're feeling sick.

Double the amount of liquids you drink. Water, warm tea with honey, orange juice, and milk are all great things to drink when your throat is sore. Extremely cold or extremely hot things feel nice going down the throat. Your drink will also keep your mucus thin and easy to clear.[2]
    3. 3
Drink hot substances like tea, soup, apple cider, or bean soup.
    4. 4
Drink honey and lemon. Add a squeeze of lemon and some honey to hot water. Drink after the liquid reaches room temperature. The honey coats and soothes your throat, while the lemon cuts through the mucus. This tried and true remedy is said to relieve most of your throat pain -- at least temporarily. [2]
    5. 5
Eat or drink something warm and soothing. Green Tea with honey/Lemon is a time-tested remedy. Any kind of soup like chicken noodle, minestrone, beef and barley, vegetable, etc. is great for your sore throat. Try avoiding soups with high sodium content since the salt can irritate or burn the throat.
    6. 6
Use lozenges and throat sprays. They will offer temporary relief against your sore throat.
    7. 7
Even if it is disgusting, take some cough syrup. This will help to suppress a cough (if one develops), as well as ease throat pain.
    8. 8
Rest your voice. Speak softly or avoiding speaking all together. Perhaps take a day off from work or school to rest. If talking is a necessity, keep from shouting or talking loud, as these will damage the throat much more than simple talking. Whisper or talk softly.[3]
    9. 9
Take painkillers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin etc.) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). [3]
    10. 10
Gargle warm salt water. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. This is an unappealing remedy, but it is very effective. Drink the water, gargle it and then spit it out. This will help alleviate pain and clear your throat of mucus.
    11. 11
Take a spoonful of honey. Honey acts like a lotion to lubricate or coat the throat and temporarily relieve pain. A teaspoon of honey swallowed before bed will ensure a cough-free slumber.
    12. 12
Ginger and chamomile tea are extremely popular with sore throats.
